Investigators are only as good as the tools at their disposal. This is why we built and maintain one of the foremost state-of-the-art laboratory facilities at our Littleton, CO headquarters. With over 14,000 square feet on a two-acre lot, we are able to easily host large-scale examinations of artifacts collected from loss locations. Both destructive and non-destructive testing can be accommodated based on the needs of our client and the case.
AEI’s suite of labs and testing areas include:

- Main Lab - suitable for large, joint examinations, benchtop, and full-scale indoor testing.
- Clean Lab – includes AEI’s Keyence Microscope with VH Zoom Lens, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, photo table, and X-Ray equipment.
- SEM Lab – home to AEI’s Scanning Electron Microscopy Analysis and Imaging. This includes a sample prep area for grinding and polishing.
- Warehouse – used for testing as well as artifact/evidence secure storage.
- 2.5 acre lot – allows for full-scale testing and fire cause evaluation.

Shawn A. Sapp, Ph.D., Lead Scientist
Dr. Sapp is ASM Certified in Fracture Mechanics, Fractography, and Failure Analysis to determine the origin and cause of failures in metals, ceramics, plastics, and composites. He is a highly experienced electrochemist and metallographer with over twelve years of experience in industrial, aerospace, marine, and electronics corrosion testing and surface analysis.
Matthew S. Dare, MS, ASEP, Scientist
Mr. Dare is experienced preforming root cause analysis of defects in various materials, including glass, ceramics, metals, polymers, and thin films. Mr. Dare has further utilized his background and skillsets to conduct reliability, corrosion, humidity, and Highly Accelerated Life Testing (HALT) studies to identify common failure and material degradation modes.
John C. Curzon - Technician
Mr. Curzon brings to the position a vast body of experience in production, installation, service, and support for electro-mechanical aspects of custom automated industrial equipment.
